Fabric consumption

The amount of fabric needed to make one garment, usually expressed in meters per garment.

It is calculated from the marker: the length of the marker divided by the number of garments it contains, plus an allowance for the ends of the lay and for waste. Fabric yield is the same calculation seen the other way around: how many garments you get per unit of fabric. Consumption depends on the pattern, the sizes, the fabric width and how well the pieces are arranged in the marker.

Example

If a marker with 6 garments is 9 meters long on the usable width, the consumption per garment is 1.5 meters, before the allowance for the ends of the lay.
