Blouse Sewing Patterns: Ruffled, Wrap and Shirt-Style — page 2 of 3
The blouse is a detail garment: ruffles, sleeves, necklines and closures change the cost and the assembly time of every unit. The catalog gathers wrap blouses, off-the-shoulder, with puff or bell sleeves, ruffled, shirt-style, cropped, sleeveless and maternity and nursing styles, in women's from XS to 4XL and in girls' from 2 to 18.
The Modeltex catalog has 167 blouse sewing patterns (162 for women, 5 for girls), all approved with a sewn sample and with the size range available on each product page; the most affordable PDF starts at US$23 with the standard size selection.
Blouse styles: ruffles, wraps and sleeves
There are ruffled and wrap blouses with a V-neck, off-the-shoulder with applique or buttons, with a square neckline and puff sleeves, high-neck with a keyhole opening, with a lace yoke and bell sleeves, and shirt-style blouses with a collar. A line is built by changing the sleeve and the neckline on a common base.
Ruffled blouses need large, circular pieces: in the A4 PDF they go together with many taped sheets, so for production the true-scale plotter is the better choice.
Blouse fabrics and how they behave
The blouse is cut in lightweight woven fabrics such as crepe, chiffon, viscose, poplin, voile and satin, and in knits such as rib or light jersey. Light fabrics shift on the table: spread them over paper, cut with a rotary cutter or sharp shears and use fine needles so the seam does not pucker the fabric. Chiffon and sheer fabrics call for clean seams, French or with a fine serger stitch. Necklines and sleeveless edges are finished with bias binding, and on the wrap blouse the crossover has to be reinforced so it does not gape.
Blouse production checkpoints
Time is lost in three places on a blouse: the gathering of the puff sleeve, the ruffle and the button placket. The gathering is done with two passes of long stitch and distributed over the armhole before sewing. The ruffle is folded and tested on a sample before its width is set. The placket needs interfacing and buttonholes at the same distance in every size. Plan the consumption ahead of time, because the ruffle and the gathering use much more fabric width than the body of the blouse.
Common fabrics for blouses: crepe, chiffon, viscose, poplin, voile, satin.

Frequently asked questions about blouse sewing patterns
What is the difference between a blouse and a shirt in the catalog?
The blouse groups women's garments with design details such as ruffles, wraps, necklines and special sleeves, while the shirt tends to be a classic cut with a collar and button placket. Some shirt-style blouses share traits with the shirt. If your line is office wear or uniform, look for shirt, and if it is fashion, look for blouse.
Are there blouses with puff sleeves and off-the-shoulder styles?
Yes. There are blouses with puff, bell and flutter sleeves, and with bare shoulders, with ruffles or with buttons, plus Bardot and off-shoulder necklines. Puff sleeves take more fabric and even gathering at the armhole. Check on the pattern page which recommended fabric takes the gathering without becoming heavy.
How do you cut a chiffon or very light fabric blouse?
Cut one layer at a time over paper, with the fabric well settled and the pieces held with weights instead of pins. Use a rotary cutter or sharp shears and a fine needle for sewing. French seams or a fine serger stitch keep chiffon from fraying and keep the seam from showing.
