Dress Sewing Patterns to Produce and Sell — page 2 of 9

The dress is the garment with the most variants in the catalog: long, short, shirt dresses, wrap, one-shoulder, halter, party and bridal, all approved with a sewn sample. Women's sizes run from XS to 4XL and girls' from 2 to 18, in A4 PDF and true-scale plotter, with a license to manufacture and sell without limits.

The Modeltex catalog has 490 dress sewing patterns (437 for women, 53 for girls), all approved with a sewn sample and with the size range available on each product page; the most affordable PDF starts at US$23 with the standard size selection.

Dress styles you can produce

The catalog covers long, short and midi dresses, shirt dresses, wrap, one-shoulder, halter, strapless, corset, party and bridal styles. For girls there are party dresses with a circle skirt or tulle skirt, communion dresses, folk dresses and denim dresses. With that range you can build a seasonal line or an occasion-wear collection with a single pattern supplier.

For a production run, the plotter PDF at true width goes straight onto the cutting table. The A4 PDF is for testing the sample and taping the numbered sheets together. DXF files for Optitex or Audaces are available on request.

Dress fabrics and how they behave when cut

In a dress, the fabric decides the result as much as the pattern does. Crepe, chiffon, satin and viscose give drape in wrap and long styles, but they shift on the table: spread them over paper, cut one layer at a time and check the grainline on every piece. Bias-cut or full-skirt dresses are hung before the hem is leveled, because the fabric keeps dropping on the diagonal.

Fabrics with a directional sheen, a pile or sequins force you to cut every piece in the same direction, and that raises fabric consumption compared with a plain fabric.

What to watch when producing a run of dresses

Three points drive the cost of a dress: the zipper, the lining and the hem. On a fitted woven, the invisible zipper takes interfacing in the area and goes in before the side seams are closed. Corset styles need boning or rigid interfacing in the panel seams, and party dresses with sheer panels take a lining or a slip. Consumption changes with length and sweep, so calculate it from the marker of each size and not from the middle size.

Common fabrics for dresses: crepe, chiffon, satin, viscose, lace, stretch jersey.

Frequently asked questions about dress sewing patterns

Do the dress patterns work for both woven and knit fabrics?

It depends on the pattern, and each pattern page lists its recommended fabrics. A fitted dress designed for stretch knit does not behave the same in crepe or chiffon, because a woven does not give and needs a zipper or darts. Decide first on the fabric your supplier sells, and only then choose the style.

Are there party, formal and bridal dress patterns?

Yes. There are long and short party dresses with sequins, chiffon, lace, corset bodices, halter necklines and mermaid cuts, plus bridal and formal styles for girls with a tulle skirt. All women's dresses go up to size 4XL, so you can offer extended sizes in an occasion-wear line.

Which format is best for cutting dresses in volume?

The plotter PDF at true width (90, 120 or 150 cm) is the most practical for cutting in volume, because it prints to scale with no taping. If the dress has pieces with a lot of sweep, pick the plotter width that fits them. The A4 PDF is for the sample, and DXF files or MRK markers are available on request.

How do I calculate how much fabric a dress needs?

You lay the pieces of the size on the usable width of the fabric. There is no single figure, because length, sweep, prints and the direction of the fabric all change the result. Make a marker for a small size, a middle size and the largest, and average them according to your size range. The fabric consumption guide explains the method.
