Jacket Sewing Patterns: Bomber, Aviator and Hooded for Production — page 2 of 3

The jacket is the most complex garment to assemble in the workshop: lining, zipper, interfacing and, depending on the style, fill. The catalog offers hooded jackets with a kangaroo pocket, bomber, aviator with a shearling collar, windbreakers, puffers, fleece, faux leather and corduroy, for women, men and kids, in adult sizes up to 4XL.

The Modeltex catalog has 131 jacket sewing patterns (69 for women, 35 for men, 11 for boys, 6 for girls, 5 for unisex adults, 4 for unisex kids, 1 for babies), all approved with a sewn sample and with the size range available on each product page; the most affordable PDF starts at US$23 with the standard size selection.

Jacket types and what they demand in the workshop

The hooded zip jacket is the most versatile. The bomber has rib-knit cuffs and waistband and is cut in a light fabric. The aviator with a shearling or pile collar has few pieces but delicate sewing. The puffer needs a pattern that allows for volume, and the windbreaker is designed for lightweight fabrics.

There are also faux leather jackets, biker and motorcycle jackets with protection, corduroy jackets with cargo pockets, fleece jackets with a high collar, plush jackets, athletic jackets with stripes and school styles.

Jacket fabrics, lining and fill

Each fabric changes the process. Faux leather does not take pins or unpicked stitching, because every puncture stays marked, and it does not take a direct iron. Shearling and plush have a pile with a direction: cut one layer at a time, with the pile running the same way, and trim the seam allowance so it does not add bulk.

The puffer is quilted before cutting, because quilting shrinks the piece: if you quilt afterward, the panel comes out smaller than the pattern. The lining is cut with enough ease so it does not pull when the arms move.

What to check when producing a run of jackets

The separating zipper is chosen by the length of each size, and the tape must not be stretched while sewing so the jacket does not ripple. On the collar and the hood, interfacing keeps them from distorting. Rib-knit cuffs and waistbands are cut shorter than the opening of the garment. Test the sample with all the real layers on (fabric, fill and lining), because the volume changes the fit, and record every component on the workshop tech pack.

Common fabrics for jackets: windbreaker fabric, polar fleece, faux leather, corduroy, shearling, plush fleece.

Frequently asked questions about jacket sewing patterns

Which jacket is the simplest to produce?

The bomber and the athletic zip jacket with rib-knit cuffs have few pieces and no fill, so they are the simplest to assemble. The aviator with a shearling collar, the puffer and the faux leather jacket demand more skill: lining, fill or fabrics that do not forgive mistakes. Choose according to the machines and the staff your workshop has.

Are there puffer and hooded winter jacket patterns?

Yes. There are hooded puffer jackets for women, men and kids, and also fleece, plush and school winter styles. On puffers the quilting shrinks the piece, so the panel is quilted before cutting and consumption is checked with the real marker, not an estimate.

How do you work the shearling collar of an aviator jacket?

Shearling is cut one layer at a time, with the pile always running the same way, and then the seam allowance is trimmed so the join does not add bulk. There are aviator styles with a shearling collar, a pile collar and cropped. Test the sample in the real fabric, because the volume of the pile changes the fit of the collar.

Can the jacket be produced in large sizes?

Yes. The adult range goes up to 4XL on the styles that include it, and each pattern page lists the available sizes. Because a jacket is worn over other layers, the ease at the armhole and sleeve of the largest size is the first thing to test on a sample, with the final fabric, fill and lining.
