Sweatshirt and Hoodie Sewing Patterns for Volume Production — page 3 of 4
The sweatshirt is the cold-season garment that lends itself best to volume production: few pieces and simple sewing. The catalog includes kangaroo-pocket hoodies, half-zip high-neck styles, raglan, oversized, cropped, henley and sweaters, for women, men, kids and babies, with sizes from XS to 4XL in adults and 2 to 18 in kids.
The Modeltex catalog has 181 sweatshirt sewing patterns (76 for women, 45 for men, 20 for boys, 17 for girls, 15 for unisex kids, 4 for unisex adults, 4 for babies), all approved with a sewn sample and with the size range available on each product page; the most affordable PDF starts at US$23 with the standard size selection.
Sweatshirt styles: hoodie, high neck and raglan
The hoodie with a hood, front kangaroo pocket and drawstring comes classic, oversized, raglan, two-tone, printed and in plush or sherpa. The high-neck style with a short zip covers the athletic line, and henleys with buttons, crew necks and cropped styles round out women's and men's. There are also sweatshirt and jogger sets, so you can sell the full set.
The family also includes sweaters, knitted or ribbed, mostly in women's but also in men's. They are worked differently from a French terry sweatshirt: the knit is cut without stretching and the edges are finished so they do not open up.
Sweatshirt fabrics and what happens when you cut them
French terry and brushed fleece are the reference fabrics for the sweatshirt. Heavyweight cotton fleece, polar fleece, plush and teddy fleece are warmer and change the work. Brushed fleece sheds lint on the spread and in the cutter, so clean the table and the machines between batches. Fabric weight changes consumption directly: a sweatshirt in light terry and another in thick terry do not yield the same even with the same pattern.
Cuffs and waistband go in rib knit, which is bought separately and cut shorter than the opening so it fits snugly.
Sweatshirt production checkpoints
The hood is double-layered and takes eyelets for the drawstring. The kangaroo pocket is attached before the side seams are closed, and the high neck with a zipper needs interfacing and a chin guard. On a raglan sweatshirt the diagonal seam changes the shoulder fit, so it is not mixed with a classic armhole within the same size range. If the front is printed, check that the kangaroo pocket does not cover the graphic, and on oversized styles check the sleeve length of the largest size.
Common fabrics for sweatshirts: French terry, brushed fleece, polar fleece, plush fleece, teddy fleece, rib knit.

Frequently asked questions about sweatshirt sewing patterns
What is the difference between a hoodie and a raglan sweatshirt?
The hoodie is defined by the front pocket and the hood, and the raglan by a sleeve that runs up to the neck with a diagonal seam. They can be combined: there are raglan hoodies with a hood. The raglan removes the traditional shoulder seam and changes the fit, so it is evaluated on a sample before production.
Which fabric is best for a winter sweatshirt?
Brushed fleece balances warmth and cost, while polar fleece, plush or teddy fleece raise the warmth and the selling price. What matters is that the pattern is designed for the thickness: a very thick fabric needs more ease at the armhole and sleeves. Check the recommended fabrics on the page of each style.
Are there sweatshirt patterns for kids and babies?
Yes. There are sweatshirts for boys, girls, unisex kids and babies, in addition to women's, men's and unisex adult. In kids the range runs from 2 to 18 and in adults from XS to 4XL. Babies have their own size scale, which is listed on the page of each style.
How do you attach the zipper on a high-neck sweatshirt?
The short zipper goes into the front opening before the collar is closed, with interfacing on both edges so it does not ripple. The collar is finished with a chin guard. It is a quality point tested on the sample, because the knit stretches the edge and the opening ends up long if it is not stabilized.
