Pants Sewing Patterns: Jeans, Cargo and Dress Pants for Production — page 2 of 2
Pants are the garment where pattern quality shows the most: rise, inseam and drape are visible in every unit that leaves the workshop. The catalog includes jeans, cargo, baggy, palazzo, wide leg, chinos, dress pants with darts and uniform pants, with women's and men's ranges from XS to 4XL and kids' from 2 to 18, all approved with a sewn sample.
The Modeltex catalog has 100 pants sewing patterns (53 for women, 31 for men, 9 for girls, 6 for boys, 1 for unisex adults), all approved with a sewn sample and with the size range available on each product page; the most affordable PDF starts at US$23 with the standard size selection.
Pants styles: from jeans to dress pants
This family covers straight, wide and baggy jeans, cargo pants with side pockets, high-rise palazzo and wide leg, chinos, dress pants with darts, tactical pants and uniform pants.
Each type puts a different decision to the workshop. Jeans and cargo need machines that can handle several layers of denim and reinforced pockets. Dress pants have an interfaced waistband, darts and a zip fly. Baggy and palazzo change the consumption, because the wide leg takes up much more room in the marker.
Pants fabrics and shrinkage before cutting
Denim, gabardine, cotton drill and twill are the base of jeans and workwear pants. Dress pants use suiting or lighter gabardine, and there are styles in corduroy and faux leather. Before cutting, run a wash test: denim that is not preshrunk shrinks mostly in length, and a correct pattern still comes out short if you do not compensate. Fabrics with spandex need a pattern designed for them, not a rigid-fabric pattern cut in stretch fabric.
Common mistakes when producing pants
The costliest mistake is the rise: if it wrinkles, sits too high or pulls at the crotch, the whole run fails. Test the sample in the final fabric before grading, and check the rise with the wrinkles guide. Women's and men's ranges do not grade the hip the same way, so start from the pattern of the right segment. Also watch the straight grain of the legs: a leg cut off grain twists after washing.
Common fabrics for pants: denim, gabardine, cotton drill, twill, corduroy, suiting.

Frequently asked questions about pants sewing patterns
What is the difference between a jeans pattern and a dress pants pattern?
The jeans pattern is designed for rigid denim, with patch pockets, reinforcement seams and a firm waistband. The dress pants pattern has darts or pleats, inset pockets and a zip fly. Using one in place of the other changes the drape and the fit, so choose according to the fabric you are going to cut and the end customer.
Are there cargo and baggy pants patterns?
Yes. Cargo comes in many versions: with side pockets, multiple pockets, in denim and with an elasticated cuff. There are also baggy, wide leg and palazzo styles. For cargo, calculate consumption with the actual style, because pockets with a gusset and flap add pieces and an estimate made with plain pants falls short.
What do I do if the pants wrinkle at the rise?
Almost always the problem is in the length or the curve of the rise, not in the seam. Test the sample in the final fabric, mark where the wrinkles form and correct the pattern before grading. The guide on wrinkles at the rise details the most common causes and how to fix each one.
Are there school uniform and work pants patterns?
Yes. There are school uniform pants, tactical pants with multiple pockets and denim carpenter pants. They are produced in gabardine, twill or denim, with reinforced pockets and seams that hold up to industrial washing. The uniforms guide explains how an institutional order is organized, from fabric to delivery.
