Smock, School Coat and Pinafore Sewing Patterns for Batch Production

A uniform is produced to order: a school or a business, a list of sizes, and a delivery date. The smock, school coat, and pinafore patterns in the catalog come with the complete kids' size range and, in some styles, the adult range, so you can repeat the run on reorders without redoing the pattern work.

The Modeltex catalog has 15 uniform sewing patterns (6 for girls, 3 for unisex kids, 3 for boys, 1 for unisex adults, 1 for women, 1 for men), all approved with a sewn sample and with the size range available on each product page; the most affordable PDF starts at US$23 with the standard size selection.

Uniforms in the catalog: smocks, school coats, and pinafores

There are school smocks with a gingham collar, with a collar and pocket, sleeveless with piping, crossover with a front pocket, or with a tie and buttons; school coats with a collar and pocket; and sleeveless school pinafores with pockets and a side opening, or with a round neck and ruffles. There is also an adult bib apron with a pocket, and some styles with a size range that runs from kids to adults.

Fabrics and sewing for a uniform that is washed every day

For smocks and school coats, use poplin, drill, plain-weave cotton, and gingham, almost always in a cotton-polyester blend, which shrinks less and holds up to frequent washing. Seams on pockets, collar, and closure are reinforced with double stitching, and pockets get bartacks at the corners. Prewash a square of fabric and measure the shrinkage before setting the smock length. On a sleeveless pinafore, the armhole and neckline are finished with piping or bias binding, and ruffles add fabric and sewing time.

Producing uniforms by batch: sizes, colors, and reorders

Each school is a separate order: ask for the quantity-by-size sheet before buying fabric, buy the color from a single dye lot, and record the shade, the lot, and the embroidery position in the customer file. That way, on a reorder, you repeat the same smock without asking anything again. In gingham, the checks are matched at the sides and the center. For batch runs, plotter prints work better than A4 sheets.

Common fabrics for uniforms: gingham, poplin, drill, plain-weave cotton, gabardine, cotton-polyester blend.

Frequently asked questions about uniform sewing patterns

Which sizes does a school smock pattern need to cover?

The whole kids' range, from 2 to 18, because a school runs from kindergarten through high school. Most smocks and pinafores in the catalog come with that complete range. Adult sizes are for teachers and staff, and some styles include them. Take the final size split from the customer's sheet, not from an estimate.

What is the difference between a smock, a school coat, and a pinafore?

A pinafore has no sleeves and covers the torso. A smock can have sleeves or not, and can be crossover or buttoned. A school coat has a collar, sleeves, and buttons down the front. Each has its own pattern and fabric consumption, and in the catalog all three sit under the same garment, so you can choose by style.

How do you reinforce a smock for frequent washing?

With double stitching on the pockets, collar, and armholes, bartacks at the pocket corners, and a stable fabric, such as a cotton-polyester blend. Prewash a swatch to measure the shrinkage and allow for that length in the pattern. A single seam on a pocket is the first thing that opens on a uniform.

Can you embroider or print the school's name?

Yes. Embroidery is the most common choice on pockets and chest, and its position is marked on the pattern so it lands in the same place in every size. On cotton or blends you can screen print; sublimation only fixes on polyester. Define the personalization when quoting, because it changes the fabric and the production flow.
