Boxer, Brief and Underwear Sewing Patterns for Production

Underwear is produced in large batches, with small pieces, stretch knit fabric, and seams that can't chafe. That calls for a pattern with the stretch worked out properly and tidy sewing. The catalog includes boxers, briefs, high-rise briefs, shaping briefs, and corsets, with a size range and a sewn sample, to produce and sell what you make.

The Modeltex catalog has 20 underwear sewing patterns (9 for women, 8 for men, 2 for boys, 1 for girls), all approved with a sewn sample and with the size range available on each product page; the most affordable PDF starts at US$23 with the standard size selection.

Boxers, briefs, and high-rise briefs: the underwear in the catalog

There are boxers with an elasticized waist, long boxers, printed boxers, and boxers with a contoured front seam; classic briefs with a contrast waistband and swim briefs with color blocks; high-rise briefs and shaping briefs; and corsets with straps, with boning, and belt-style. For kids there are kids' boxers and briefs with the 2-to-18 size range. With pieces this small, a dense marker in CAD or on a plotter saves fabric.

Elastic, flat seams, and gusset: the key to underwear

The garment is made of cotton knit with spandex, microfiber, or modal, and the pattern is drawn with negative ease. The waist and leg elastic is cut per size and tested with the final fabric. Seams are sewn with a stretch stitch and kept flat to avoid chafing, and the gusset gets a reinforcement or a lining. Order elastic by the roll and from the same lot for the whole run, because a change of lot changes its strength. Check the composition, size, and care label before packing.

Corsets and shaping briefs in underwear: boning and closures

Corsets and shaping briefs work with higher-compression fabric and pieces that support the body. The boning goes in channels sewn into the garment and is chosen by the length of each piece; the closure is usually hooks or snaps at the front or the side. To produce in series, define the channel and the boning position on the pattern, and check the fit with a sample in the middle size.

Common fabrics for underwear: cotton spandex, microfiber, modal, shapewear fabric, swimwear fabric.

Frequently asked questions about underwear sewing patterns

What elastic does a boxer take?

A wide waist elastic, covered or jacquard, and on the legs a thin one or an elastic hem, both sewn around the edge with a stretch stitch. It is cut to a different length in each size, and that measurement is confirmed with a test of the final fabric. The boxers in the catalog have wide elasticized waistbands.

How do you sew the gusset of briefs?

With a reinforcement or lining in the gusset and flat seams so they don't chafe. It is sewn with a stretch stitch, which gives with the fabric without breaking the thread. The rise and the gusset width are approved with a sewn sample before cutting the run, because an error there repeats in every unit.

What fabric works for production underwear?

Lightweight cotton with spandex, microfiber, or modal, because they recover their shape and don't distort. For swim briefs, swimwear fabric with spandex; for shapewear, compression fabric. Test the washing and the recovery of the fabric before cutting: if the spandex loses strength, the garment distorts.

Are there underwear patterns for kids?

Yes: the catalog includes kids' briefs and boxers with the kids' size range from 2 to 18. They are produced in cotton with spandex, an elasticized waist, and flat seams, with the size and composition label as on adult garments. Each product page lists the available sizes of the pattern.
